....not necessarily in this order :)
1. CALL A FRIEND. You’ve seen that game show, ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’, right? One of the options you have when you’re stuck in a bind is to call a friend! Let’s not be complicated. Sometimes, you just need to hear someone tell you it’s going to be OK. I have a few close friends that I can call and tell them ANYTHING. I can tell them ANYTHING. When I’m feeling overwhelmed with my own life and maybe my perspective is a little ‘off’, I’ve learned to pick up the phone and vent and cry and whine and allow other people to help me get through a tough moment! I’ve GOT to tell you, I wasn’t always able to do that. I’ve always been a relatively private person and I’ve just dealt with things on my own a lot of times. It’s good, but it’s also bad. I’ve learned that I need people and I’ve learned that it’s better to let it out than to implode.
2. REFOCUS. I always say, when you change your perspective, you can change your life and it really is true. What you believe and what you focus on will dominate your life. What are you focused on? I post notes up on my fridge, on my phone, in my car…wherever I can, to remind myself of my goals and all that I can have and be. Get some visuals together. Write down your own biography. Write down your goals. Focus on you want. Pursue that ONLY. Focus on your dream. Focus on your NEXT STEPS. You’ve heard it said that you cannot move forward while looking backwards.
3. WRITE OUT YOUR FEELINGS. As a songwriter, I have learned how truly important it is to release your feelings. There’s something healing about writing down how you feel, even if it’s bad. Go and get a journal. Write down your feelings. Read back over them and you’ll realize where your emotions are getting
the best of you. You may even realize that what your feeling is OK. Sometimes, emotions just get us into another place.
4. REFLECT. If you’re going to focus on your past at all, focus on all the tough areas in your life where you made it through. Sometimes when you’re in a tight situation, it’s good to think about the things that have already happened and it will encourage you and open your mind to all the other possibilities. Take a moment
to reflect and when you do that, you’ll realize that your situation may not be as big as what you think it is. Even if it is a tremendously tough situation, reflection will remind you that you’ve made it through before and you can do it again.
5. CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT. You know, it may sound funny, but sometimes, feeling down feels so good. I mean, it’s just easier sometimes to feel bad and it’s easy to stay stuck in your feelings. Sometimes, you just need to change your environment. Click here to check out a pretty cool article about
how your environment can affect your life. It’s true. Sometimes, you just need to change your environment to break your mind out of that negative cycle. Get up and go sit in a coffee shop you’ve never been before and take your journal with you. Go out and get some fresh flowers for your house. Or post some positive visuals around you to remind yourself of what you want and where you want to go. Maybe you need to carve out a section of your house that is just for you. Maybe you need some new friends and some new people in your life to help you change your perspective. Your environment is not only where you are in terms of location, but also encompasses your entire association (your friends, your job, your home, your circle of influence). Take some time to think about how your environment is impacting you. You may be able to identify some triggers that are making you feel negatively.
